They had me with the tree…

I’ve begun That Winter the Wind Blows.

(Because there just hasn’t been enough melo in my life. I lie. Actually there’s been so much melo I’m having to rethink my whole, “I only like melo when I’m in a certain mood,” theory. Or maybe those moods last for a good long while? I’ll have to gather more evidence.)

I do know this. Unless something goes horrible wrong, I’m in TWtWB for the long haul. Because so much beauty! Seriously, so much beauty.  Here’s the opening sequence:

We start with tree:tree photo ScreenShot2013-02-14at75859PM2_zpsf4e34211.png

The tree fades:

We scan to baby:

Have a brief moment of, “oh, cute…” which shifts into horror when we realize there’s an adult fleeing the scene (the beautiful, beautiful scene):

Head back to tree, which fades into…

Which lands us in our protagonist’s apartment. We’ve not had a moment of dialogue and I’m already breathless.  And the stunning camera work only continues.  It’s helped out by the beauty of the leads, of course.

Song Hye-kyo — not ugly

Jo In-sung — also, not an eyesore

But the cinematography takes their beauty and works it like a working thing. There’s such an awesome use of light and color to make every scene just feel like it’s winter. There’s the stark black and cold blue above, or the color just fades to bleak. Like color is trapped beneath a dusting of snow.

Even warm colors are faded out to something almost cool, as seen in Oh-soo’s (beautiful, beautiful) apartment.

Not that everything is stark and bleak. We do get warmth, like here when our leads meet for the very first time:

But it’s a candle’s worth (at least for now). More of a promise of warmth than a comfy, coziness at this very moment.

Fortunately, the story itself seems pretty solid. I’ve seen the movie the drama’s based on (which in turn was based on a j-drama? I think?) so I’m familiar with the basic plot. And I really like how they’re fleshing things out. For example, in the movie, Oh-young’s brother is spoken of, but other than a few photos we never see him.  Here we get to know him. And we see how knowing him effects Oh-soo, rather than being told of their friendship.

And they’ve done a good job of setting Oh-soo on this admittedly skeevy path (“Hey, kids! Let’s scam a blind girl out of her money by pretending to be her long lost brother!”) for reasons that leave me actually sympathizing with him. While also hoping he finds a way out, of course.

They’ve also done an excellent job of undercutting the whole, faux-cest thing. I won’t say how, since I don’t want to spoil anything in this very first introductory post. But at this point I’m comfortable with any burgeoning romance.

Dramas can always turn on you, so I’m laying out no promises. But as of right now? I’m all in.

Wow. Poetically said, and so spot-on! ❤

I was going to give Winter a pass, but now I'm intrigued 😉

    • Thanks! Yeah, I was totally like, “another melo? I don’t think so” and then I watched and now I’m super, super intrigued (like to such an extent I’m not sure you should trust my judgement 😉 so apparently the answer was actually, “Yup! Another melo!” 😀

  2. I haven’t had time to check it out yet but so far the buzz seems to be favourable. I knew the cinematography was going to be gorgeus as I’ve watched Padam, Padam – I’m just hoping the story holds up better here. Padam sort of fizzled out towards the end. Actually, I can’t even remember how it did end. o_0

    • Padam is on my to-watch list. I have seen the movie that predates this drama (based on a j-drama, so I’m not sure if this drama is sourcing the movie, the j-drama, or both) and… I’m just going to wait and find out how this one ends. (My understanding is the movie and the j-drama had different endings.) I really, really hope it maintains its beginning. But we’ll have to see.

      • I watched all 3 episodes during the weekend and I’m kinda sad now because I’m the odd one out – once again. Everyone seems to have gone gaga over TWtWB but me. 😦 It’s well written, acting is fine and the cinematography is absolutely gorgeus but….. I’m feeling nothing, nada, zlich, zero; I’m totally detached when it comes to the characters. Sigh. The story is rather interesting and I am qurious to see how it all pans out but I’m not sure if that will be enough for me to keep watching though. Actually, the only character to get a rise out of me was that crazy beotch So Ra. I got the sudden urge to strangle her. LOL!

        • Hee! So-ra was amazingly crazy. At first I felt sorry for her because I thought Oh-soo had trifled with her, so I thought her setting him up was kind of… okay, a little beyond “just-desserts” but you know, a bit understandable. And then came her keep-you-tucked-away-safe speech and her total earnestness and all sympathy switched fully over to Oh-soo. (Though I was still a bit in awe of her thoroughness.)

I’m sad that the show as a whole hasn’t hit your sweet spot, though of course that happens. For me, I’ve fallen pretty heavily for the leads (and therefore the supporting because they support Oh-soo) so everything else just adds to my experience. But if the characters aren’t speaking to you… It’ll be interesting to see if the plot carries you through — but of course, there are far too many dramas out there to force-watch one.

  3. Wow Betsy! YOU had at “They had me with the tree…”

I am on a post-CdAlice hiatus which is proving to be effortlessly self perpetuating and so I’ve been happy enough to to just read about your ongoing forays into KDrama here. I even blogged about the apparent break in my addiction on my everything-AND-the-kitchen-sink blog primarily because it kind of took me by surprise. I suspect that it has something to do with how true CdA struck with me as well crafted and executed story so maybe I will be able to properly articulate it someday.

So here I am enjoying my sobriety and then this… this quite beautifully evocative description that might just pull me back in. I will let you know if that happens. 🙂

    • Hah! Like a little package saying, “Eat me”. 😀 Also, yay! I’m glad I was able to articulate my sudden grabby-hands for this drama.

And thank you for posting a link to your blog! I had no idea you had one, but now I can follow you. 🙂

      • So I thought I’d take a peek at TWtWB (too curious, I guess;-D) and ’tis a good thing I did this on a Friday evening ’cause the peek lasted three hours! I definitely like. 🙂

I’m glad that it is good, and it may be a blessing that it is new and therefore a piecemeal live watching. I can respect the natural flow of my drama hiatus but still get a good-story-fix on the weekends.

Despite my aspired maturity, I found myself the next day feeling rather dismayed that I would have to wait a whole week for the fourth episode so I went in search of the film “사랑따윈 필요없어” (Love Me Not) just to get a preview of the story even though the drama may turn out differently.

It was a rather pleasant surprise to find Kim Joo-hyuk in the lead and and even greater delight to discover Moon Geun Young opposite him! (I really like everything she does!) So for now, my thirst is happily quenched and I can return to reading books in my free time – something I had not done for while.

On a different not, thank you for stopping by my hiatus post – I appreciate the perspective of someone who has experienced the same initial encounter with K-Drama. I’m betting there are many of us out there!

        • Live-watching does bring with it its own enforced discipline. Which, I sometimes have to remind myself, it a good thing. 😉

I’m glad you searched and found “Love Me Not”. I watched it a while ago, so my memory of it is a little vague, but it’s the reason I’d been intrigued with TWtWB despite being sure I was filled up full of melo. It’s going to be interesting to see how the drama differs from the movie.

And finally, you’re welcome! 😀 And yes, I’m sure many have had similar experiences.
